Today’s charming village of Aberffraw was the capital of the Kingdom of Gwynedd in the early Middle Ages and at one point was the most important political centre in medieval Wales. With shops and an excellent tea-room at the Llys Llewelyn Heritage Centre it is a great place to start several spectacular walks and explore the nearby island of Cribinau. A favourite is the walk to the wild expansive dune-backed beach of Traeth Mawr, alternatively you can swim down the sandy creek from Aberffraw village at high tide. The hidden beach of Porth Tywyn-Mawr to the south of the main beach, can be reached by a walk along the foreshore otherwise it is almost inaccessible by other means.
