Carnan Mor, Grid Reference NM 18357 57706, stands at 141 metres and can be reached by a largely free-range route from Hynish. Great views of the whole of Tiree, the Ceann a’ Mara headland and the Skerravore light house to the south-west.
Park behind the Skerryvore exhibition, Hynish. Walk to the end of the B8066 to where the tarmac road turns into a track and follow until the last house is reached. Continue straight ahead to find a small path alongside the shoreline. Pass the head of a valley (which continues to the sea) and then head directly uphill towards Carnan Mor (NNW). Continue through the rougher moorland, find the gap in the stone wall to reach the tarmac road, turn right towards the radar. Before reaching the fence line for the radar station the trig point can be found to the left.
Return the same route or descend the service road all the way down. At the road junction turn left, past the houses and continue along the coastal track to a quarry. Keep left around the quarry and continue across grass and then a pebble bay. Find a free-range route above the coastline back to Hynish.
